Recent Events

Young carer events give young carers the chance to take a break, act their age, have fun and sometimes gain new skills. We hold young carer events, activities and camps for young carers aged between 8 to 25. Sometimes, we even have parent/ young carer events or family fun events too! Scroll down to check out some of our recent events.

Join The Circus

Circus WA and Young Carers teamed up in July 2016 to offer young carers aged 8 to 12 a chance to join the circus for a day. Circus WA led two workshops; workshop one was on physical circus skills such as forward rolls and trapeze and workshop two focussed on using circus props such as unicycles, hula hoops and spinning plates. Young carers had so much fun and impressed us with their talents! Afterwards the group had lunch at child-friendly Fremantle cafe, Moore & Moore.

NAIDOC week event - Let's Hang Out

To acknowledge NAIDOC week and celebrate our Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander young carers, a Young Carers WA team member and Carers WA's Aboriginal Engagement Officer took a group of young carers aged 8 to 17 to The Hangout indoor rock climbing centre for a Winter adventure. After warming up on the smaller walls the group bravely tried the free hanging rope and ladder.

Time Out - arcade games and The BFG

Arcade games are always a hit and during July 2016 school holidays, young carers went wild on the machines at Leisure Island, winning fun prizes - many of which they gave to their friends and family in true caring style - then relaxed over a delicious Hanhs Cafe lunch before taking in a movie adaptation of the Roald Dahl classic "The BFG". New friendships were made which were strengthened at the subsequent July school holiday events.

July School Holidays: Photography Workshop and Escape Hunt 

Young Carers aged 8-17 were invited to join us for a Photography Workshop in the July school holidays to tie in with the Young Carers: Through the Lens Photography Competition which was currently running during this period. The workshop was facilitated by professional photographer Janine Kaye and was a huge success, with the young carers learning and developing their skills in taking the perfect photo. 

The afternoon was spent visiting Escape Hunt in Fremantle were the Young Carers had to work together to solve the crime before their time was up! Congratulations again to the young carers who solved the crime and managed to escape before their time was up. 

Albany Young Carer Club 

Early in June the Albany Young Carer Club enjoyed some time out on the the track, Go Karting. A great time was had by all and even the threat of rain could not ruin the day. 

Summer fun & Big Day out at adventure world

Everybody loves Adventure World, so this January, Young Carers WA took two groups of young carers on a day of Summer fun. Young carers aged 16 to 25 took a well deserved break on Thursday 21st January - it was great to see some young carers who had been coming to Young Carers WA activities since they were young.

Young carers aged 8 to 15 went crazy on rides, including the new Kraken, on Thursday 28th. Everyone enjoyed a lunch of their choice as well as snacks and drinks.

Go Wild 2.0

The first event for 2016 was a day out at Caversham Wildlife Park for young carers aged 8 to 15 on Thursday 14th January. They cuddled koalas, learned about dingos, held a live snake, petted baby farm animals and watched a farm show, all whilst making new friends with fellow young carers. At the end of the day, everyone cooled off with an icecream or icypole from the kiosk.

Escape at the Cape - southwest YCs

Young carers aged 8 to 17 who live in the Southwest and a parent/ guardian were invited to relax at the Xscape at the Cape fun park with the Young Carers WA team on Sunday 29th November 2015. Families had a great time with a maze, trampoline tower and giant water slides and took the opportunity to meet other local Caring families. Everyone refuelled with a sausage sizzle, Millers ice-cream and parents indulged in a cafe coffee.

After the event, on Monday 30th November, the Young Carers WA team visited Cornerstone Christian College to give some fun interactive presentations raising awareness about young carers.

Strength & Resilience training - 13 to 17s

On Saturday 21st November, young carers aged 13 to 17 learned about communication, how to identify the areas in their life which help build their resilience and made an iMovie trailer for a comedy action film. They also enjoyed a feats of sweet slices, sandwiches and pizza! There will be similar workshops in 2016, so watch this space!

Drama Celebration

To celebrate Carers Week 2015 young carers aged 8 to 17 had a ball hamming it up at the Dram Celebration workshop in Currambine on Thursday 8th October. Fun exercises included a tongue twister relay, whole group play "Ice- Cream Truck" , the two person play "Fish and Chips" and improvisation. After the workshop we refuelled with a Dome lunch then returned to Carers WA for board games and a DVD.

Telethon Eco adventure camp

Young carers aged 13 to 17 from across WA camped together at the Boshack Outback "glamping" site in Wattening during the September/ October school holidays. The campsite was next to a beautiful still lake and activities included Dreamtime, learning to play the Didgeridoo, canoeing and a billy balance challenge, building our own Mia Mias (shelters) and much more. There was also plenty of time for relaxation and making new friends.  

Burgers & Bowling - 18s to 25s

Young adult carers enjoyed a fun night out at Melville Super Bowl on Friday 11th September. Even a last minute change of venue, due to circumstances out of Young Carers WAs hands, didn't  dampen the enthusiasm of pur intrepid bowlers, with the group choosing to stay on to play an extra game! We were extra lucky to have 2 champion bowlers in our group and we learnt some pointers for next time.

Strength & Resilience training - 8 to 12s

On Saturday 5th September, a small group of young carers aged 8 to 12 engaged in fun activities learning about resilience and strength. Activities included games such as The Question Web; 21, which teaches listening skills and voice projection and the most emjoyed activity of all, making an iMovie starring young carers as superheroes. Trackside Bakery supplied yummy afternoon tea with plenty left over to share with families as they watched our movie "The Super Carers".

City to Surf family fun run

The inaugural Young Carers Team participated in Perth's City to Surf on Sunday 30th August. The team ran independent of Carers WA staff and was made up of young solo teenage and adult carers as well as parents walking with their children aged 8 to 12. It was great to see photos of the team wearing their Young Carers WA team singlets! It was also so rewarding to hear feedbck from one mother who ran with her young carer "so proud of my Young Carer! Absolutely inspirational!" We are so proud of all who participated too.

Due to the success of our first go, Young Carers WA hopes to run a Young Carers WA team in a regional area of WA in 2016 too, so watch this space!

City to Surf fun run training

Families from the Young Carers WA City to Surf team met up for a Sunday morning training session on the river on 15th August, followed by refreshments at the deliciously healthy Deep Water Point Cafe in Mount Pleasant. A beautiful, sunny morning greeted those brave enough to get out of bed. We learnt winning tips from professional trainer, Elizabeth McSweeny and were even visited by a mother dolphin and her baby!

Taste Budds cooking workshops

During the July school holidays in 2015 a series of cookign workshops were held for young carers to take time out and learn new skills. At the Shared Table on Thursday evening, 9th July, young carers aged 13 to 17 and a parent or mentor cooked then shared a delicious 3 course meal.

Two groups of young carers - ages 8 to 12 and 13 to 17 - also tried their hands at some new recipes including rice paper rolls, Shephard's Pie and brownies, yum! A big thank you to the Taste Budds Cooking Studio staff who looked after us very well.

Great Southern movie event

Young carers in the Great Southern enjoyed relaxing over a free movie in Albany on the 18th of July 2015. If you're a young carer who lives in WA's beautiful Great Southern region and you would like to meet other young carers for friendship, fun and support, head to our "Upcoming Events" page for details on the Albany Young Carers Club. Culture Camp reunion event

On Saturday 11th July young carers who attended the Culture Camp for ages 8 to 12 caught up with the friends they had made at a reunion event. First, the group enjoyed a trampoline party at Bounce in Cannington with somersaulting, dodge ball and free bounce play. Then a delicious healthy lunch restored their energy - and party bags were given out. Lastly, we relaxed over a mesmerising puppet show of "Blueback",  based on the Tim Winton novel,  at the Spare Parts Puppet Theatre in Fremantle.

Bayswater Barista workshop the 2nd!

Back by popular demand, another Bayswater Barista workshop was held on Wednesday 8th July at Dome cafe in Maylands. This time young carers aged 16 to 25 were invited and it was great to see some young adults taking time out to learn a new skill and make some new friends, plus relax over pizza at Leos Food Barn. NAIDOC week family movie event

NAIDOC Week celebrates our Indigenous Australians and their history, culture and achievements. As part of the celebrations, Young Carers WA invited young carers aged 8 to 25, from an Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander background, and their families to join us for a free morning movie screening of "Inside Out" in Midland on the 7th of July. Despite some technical difficulties, a wonderful time was had by all and it was great to see some new faces!

We have also had a party at the Rollerdrome, been to Adventure World, had a family picnic at the Maze, held art classes, been rock climbing and abseiling, learnt how to paddle board, gone to the cinemas and so much more...
