Opportunities Open for Indigenous Australians to Join the Australian Public Service

Intakes for the Indigenous Apprenticeships Program (IAP) 2017 are now open, closing Tuesday 11th April. Several opportunities exist for motivated, enthusiastic school leavers, mature age students and people with disabilities who are Australian citizens and able to prove their Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Australian heritage.

Successful applicants will receive personalised, culturally appropriate training, a full time entry-level position paying a competitive salary and a nationally recognised certificate or diploma. There is some choice of location and the participating departments include the Department of Agriculture and Water Services, the Department for Education and Training and Indigenous Business Australia. Go here for a complete list of participating departments.

There are two different levels. APS2 to 3 will receive a CertIV in Government or relating to Service Delivery and APS3 to 4 will receive a Diploma in Government. Each applicant is assessed against both levels in the recruitment process.

Apprenticeships go for 12 months and include duties such as:

  • drafting documents and correspondence
  • assisting with administrative tasks
  • travel management
  • reporting
  • responding to customer queries
  • research
