A new pen-pal programme between Young Carers WA and Young Carers Bristol and South Gloucestershire was launched last Friday 15th February 2019 in Australia and England. The pen-pal programme is a place for young carers in Western Australia to form long-lasting friendships with young carers in the UK.
The aim of the Young Carers WA and Young Carers Bristol and South Gloucestershire Pen-Pal Programme is to help create a peer-to-peer support system for young carers whilst having fun. Developed by Young Carers WA’s CLOUD Schools Engagement Programme, the joint initiative between Young Carers WA and Young Carers Bristol and South Gloucestershire marks the beginnings of a growing partnership.
Andi Dackins, CLOUD Schools Engagement Officer contacted Young Carers Bristol and South Gloucestershire to discuss meeting in person during her upcoming personal trip to the UK in March. The Pen-pal programme took root from this discussion.
Andi will be visiting the Young Carers Support Centre in Bristol on the 6th of March, to meet Carol Carter, Senior Young Carers Development Officer and Kama McKenzie, Young Carers Carer’s Service Manager. Whilst there, Andi will also facilitate an Australian themed activity for young carers aged 8 to 25, including Aboriginal dot painting on boomerangs.
A new page has been added to the Young Carers WA’s website where the Pen-Pal Programme is discussed in detail. Young carers between Western Australia and Bristol & South Gloucestershire will be matched according to their similarities which are determined by a questionnaire.
