It's been my pleasure to head out to schools and help teachers understand a bit about how challenging school can be when you're in a caring role at home. You'll be glad to hear that all the teachers (and principals AND deputy principals!) I have spoken with so far are really really keen to help young carers out as much as possible. BUT they have to know you are out there first!!
I used to be a teacher myself and I know that sometimes it can seem like your teachers only care about whether you're getting your work done (or if you're behaving yourself!), but trust me - they care about how you are feeling, how you are coping and how they can help!
I've been heading out to schools in the Fremantle, Peel (that's around Mandurah, Kwinana and Rockingham) and Canning areas (from Kalamunda down to Gosnells, Thornlie, Kelmscott, Belmont and heaps more!) so far, but if your school doesn't seem to know much about young carers then get in touch with me - I'll be super excited to hear from you!
Even better, give this email address: [email protected] or this phone number: 1300 227 377 to your Deputy, Principal or Head of Student Services and ask them to get in touch with me to find out how they can help young carers!
If you have any other issues or questions then remember to give us a call or send us an email - we are here to help you fabulous young people and we are always stoked to hear from you!
Take care and keep smiling,
-Lorna (One half of the Young Carer Super Team)
