Allowance Increase for Students, Youth and Carers – Is it enough?

On the 1st of January 2018, welfare payments will increase, many of which may affect young carers.

Some of these increases will be:

  •     Youth allowance – between $4.60 to $10.90 a fortnight
  •     ABSTUDY – between $0.60 to $15.40 a fortnight
  •     Austudy – between $8.30 to $10.90 a fortnight
  •     Carer Allowance – between $2.40 and $127.10 a fortnight

These are in line with the annual Consumer Price Index.

“These increases

will help young people

who are studying or searching for work and a range of other payment recipients to keep up with increases in costs as measured by the CPI", Minister for Social Services Christian Porter claims, in a Media Release published on Monday 4th December 2017.
